This lighthouse at Cape Spear was constructed in 1955. (It's not the original lighthouse that stands close by). Its range is 23 miles. Year ago, Cape Spear was chosen as the site for a new lighthouse because it was on the rocky eastern coast near the entrance to St. John's harbor. The original light was moved to the newer (1955) building. Most tourists were taking photographs of this lighthouse, even though the original is just a short distance away.
