The first Cape Spear Lighthouse was built in 1835 to guide ships to St. John's harbour and is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland. Designated a National Historic Site, it was restored by Parks Canada to its 1835-1840 appearance and features a two-story, cubic, clapboard-sided residence with a stone tower and a red and white striped lantern. The site also includes the lightkeeper's residence and a restored World War II coastal defense battery. It was replaced in 1955 by another lighthouse, a short walking distance from this one.
