A bit of its history:
On November 25, 1990, about two dozen northern elephant seals were spotted in the small cove near the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. The seals returned each year, growing in population. Today more than 17,000 elephant seals call the Piedras Blancas rookery home, migrating thousands of miles to this secluded sandy beach twice a year. Visitors (like me) can take photos and videos from above the beach on the walkway. This time of the year, the seals are molting, shedding their outer skin, which comes off in patches.
